Our History: Over 50 Years of WINE PASSION with over 500 Years of Terroir Heritage... The Founder's Story

" thus /leːˈɡaː.tum/ means "legacy" in Latin and it represents the founder's multigenerational life journey through the world's wine cultures and uplifting human experiences, reflected on 50 years of WINE PASSION with an Argentinean winemaking heritage that goes back to the mid 1500's, over 500 years of winemaking culture, blended with Italian winemaking ancestry and over 30 years settled in California, Land of Innovation and Wine Country, all decanted together and into unfiltered human relationships. Those relationships over a lifetime, and around the globe, have allowed the founder to realize the unique transformational sense of wine tasting through the understanding of wine cultures (see TERROIR), with all the inherent "flavors of life" which the founder personally coined, collectively, as "Liquid Culture we have dedicated its own section since it truly reflects the essence of the founder's passion.

Our first LEGATUM Malbec Red Blend was produced as a small handcrafted private collection bottled in 2017 honoring a very special "Legacy-builder" in his own right, Howard Schultz, with whom the founder had once dreamt of growing Malbec at his ranch in Boulder, Colorado, to verify similarities between high-altitude Malbec planted in Mendoza versus high-altitude Malbec planted in Colorado with the variance in amplitude of daily temperatures, hence "The Original Malbec Legacy Project", while teaming up with winemaking partners, "brothers" and lifetime friends, Kevin Delson and in memoriam Phil Baron. Both of their memories, Howard's and Phil's, will always be a blessing, and a guiding principle, as they have both been a special inspiration in the founder's life.

Special Thank You to Rolando Luppino, Chief Winemaker at Pascual Toso Winery for 36 years (Bodegas y Viñedos Pascual Toso, Mendoza - Argentina), special consultant and very esteemed colleague who not only is truly one of the world's best winemakers but the one who inspired the founder's "blending passion" , so having Rolando always available to collaborate in any fashion, with such utmost humility, is "a LEGATUM honor" while sharing our wine passion together.

The Founder's Family Story, in his own words ....

"My lifetime wine journey has been inspired through my father, Ruben Santiago Seta, a passionate wine connoisseur in his own right and most detailed-oriented person I've known toward having each wine tasted at its "adequate temperature" for best tasting appreciation, and through my Italian great-grandfather, Giacomo "Don Santiago" Seta, an Italian family legend (and one of Argentina's first distributors of imported Italian products - olive oil and parmesan cheese - in the province of Buenos Aires) who planted the first seeds in my DNA by allowing me to taste my very first red wine at around age 4 (circa 1970), if memory serves me well, pouring his own handcrafted red blend (probably a Malbec, Bonarda, Sangiovese or Garnacha varietals, or perhaps a 'Burgundy Blend' of sorts, common at that time) into a southern Italian-style soup sprinkled with freshly shredded Parmesan cheese on top: this vivid moment in my childhood marked the genesis, little that I knew then, that truly sparked my Passion for Wine, Viticulture, Terroir and the Art of Wine Blending, mixed with all the daily 'simple pleasures of life': good food, good wine and good friends, intertwined and unfiltered".
